Foundation wants to replace all headstones on Soviet Military Cemetery

The Soviet Military Cemetery will probably be completely renovated. The Foundation Soviet Military Cemetery and the Netherlands War Graves Foundation want to replace all headstones and are investigating the possibilitiy thereof.

On the Soviet Military Cemetery, next to Rusthof graveyard at the Dodeweg in Leusden, lie 865 war victims from the Soviet Union. The cemetery is being managed by the Netherlands War Graves Foundation.

For a long time this cemetery was more or less forgotten. The change for the better is a result of over twenty years of investigation by Amersfoort researcher and journalist Remco Reiding. His research – incorporated in the Foundation Soviet Military Cemetery – has led to an avalanche of new, previously unknown data.

This way the identity of almost 300 soldiers has been established, their full names have been retrieved and dates of birth and death have become known. On the new headstones the proper and full names, plus dates of birth and death will be inscribed as much as possible.

The Foundation Soviet Military Cemetery and the Netherlands War Graves Foundation are hard at work to make the renovation a financial possibility. Before the year’s end they hope to have clarity as to the realization of the plans.
