Commemoration execution of 77 Soviet soldiers
Saturday 9 April 2022, 06:30 - 07:00
On April 9 1942 the only 77 prisoners of war from the Soviet Union still alive were shot near Kamp Amersfoort. This was the second greatest mass execution in The Netherlands during the Second World War and yet this event and these war victims were completely forgotten. The Soviet Military Cemetery Foundation commemorates them annually by placing 77 red candles at the crack of dawn, at the time of the execution, the moment when darkness changes into light. For the 24 soldiers who succumbed previously to hunger, illness and abuse.
