Headstones form artwork next to Soviet War Cemetery Experience

The Soviet Cemetery Foundation will open the Soviet Cemetery Experience in March in Leusden. The museum provides a powerful account of the lasting impact of World War II on soldiers and their families. Next to the museum building, a monumental artwork designed to collect rainwater has been created and will soon be completed.

The artwork incorporates hundreds of old headstones from the Soviet Cemetery, which is within walking distance of the museum. The flowing rainwater, streaming from the roof into the basin, symbolizes life. The old headstones represent death, while the Soviet star on the stones points to the sky. By reusing these gravestones, the museum is symbolically connected to the nearby cemetery.

The stones have been sponsored by donors, and individuals and businesses can still contribute. For €100 per gravestone, “Stone Bearers” help build the symbolic foundation of the foundation’s new museum. For more information, visit  Word steendrager – Sovjet Ereveld
